The History Channel Educational Programming Update
The History Channel Announces "Take A Veteran to School Day", a New National Initiative
The History Channel has developed a Take A Veteran to School Day campaign to link veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities. This nationwide initiative will help strengthen ties in your communities and bring history to life in classrooms. The History Channel is encouraging people throughout the country to organize events at their schools in the weeks leading up to Monday, November 12th, the official Veterans Day holiday. To learn more about how to organize a Take a Veteran to School event at your school or in your community, log on to veterans.com This website will include sample agendas, curriculum links, how-to guides, and information about how to work together with your local cable company to organize an event.
This campaign is not only celebratory or commemorative, there are clear links to classroom course units and lesson plans. The Story of Veterans Day – a 25-minute documentary produced in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education – will be linked to state standards. A teacher's guide to this program will be available on the website as well. This site will also include oral history guidelines for middle and high school students, and suggestions for in-class activities for grades K-12 related to this program.

The Universe: The Moon

Since the dawn of time, human beings have found comfort in the presence of the moon. A lantern for nighttime travelers, a timekeeper for farmers, and a location finder for sailors at sea, the moon has guided humans throughout history. For some cultures, the moon is considered a god, worthy of worship and reverence. As the only cosmic body ever visited by human beings, astronomers have studied the moon and its qualities in a quest to understand more about our universe. This episode in The Universe series traces the latest findings about the moon through conversations with astronomers and research scientists. With colorful visual imagery and amazing satellite footage, this episode presents up-to-date hypotheses about the moon and its origins. Viewers will learn about NASA's plans to establish an outpost on the moon as new technologies expand our ability to explore outer space. Star Wars, The Legacy Revealed

Over thirty years and six movies, George Lucas has visually captured some of the most enduring philosophy and mythology, captivating the world's imagination through his fascinating characters and engrossing dramatic stories. Pyramids of Egypt (Ancient History)
The Pyramids of Egypt were built by slaves as tombs for the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. The pyramids were marvels of ancient engineering that still inspire awe in modern-day visitors. These artificial mountains hid archaeological treasures and delights. In addition to the carefully mummified body of the pharaoh for whom each pyramid was build, one would also find articles that were intended to accompany the departed pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife. Some of these articles have made their way to museums and exhibitions. Dozens of items from the tomb of Tutankhamen, a very young pharaoh who ruled for a short nine years, have been exhibited in cities around the world.
In this mini unit, you can: wander through the Great Pyramid, follow the 1997 field season of a team of archaeologists as they excavated the bakery that fed the pyramid builders, learn about all of the pyramids of the Old Kingdom, explore a reconstruction of Khufu's pyramid complex, learn who the pyramid builders were, follow a timeline of pyramid construction, tour inside Tut’s tomb and try your hand at a wide variety of puzzles and games sure to test your knowledge and wits.

Pyramid (Recommended Resource)
There are quite a few books for children on this subject, such as David Macaulay's Pyramid (Houghton, 1975), George Hart's Ancient Egypt (Harcourt, 1989), and Jacqueline Morley's An Egyptian Pyramid (Peter Bedrick, 1991), but most of them use drawings as illustrations, whereas Putnam's has full-color photographs. The best coverage is given to Egyptian tombs, but pyramids in Nubia, Mexico, and Central America are also described. In addition to sharing information on what is known about the Egyptian pyramids, Putnam also mentions unsolved riddles about them, such as how many workers built them, how the stones were moved, etc. Occasionally, the author makes conjectures about why things were done or how people felt. The information here is similar to that found in the titles mentioned above, but the photo-essay format is a novelty. (School Library Journal Review)

Pyramids of Egypt (Ancient History)
The Pyramids of Egypt were built by slaves as tombs for the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. The pyramids were marvels of ancient engineering that still inspire awe in modern-day visitors. These artificial mountains hid archaeological treasures and delights. In addition to the carefully mummified body of the pharaoh for whom each pyramid was build, one would also find articles that were intended to accompany the departed pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife. Some of these articles have made their way to museums and exhibitions. Dozens of items from the tomb of Tutankhamen, a very young pharaoh who ruled for a short nine years, have been exhibited in cities around the world.
In this mini unit, you can: wander through the Great Pyramid, follow the 1997 field season of a team of archaeologists as they excavated the bakery that fed the pyramid builders, learn about all of the pyramids of the Old Kingdom, explore a reconstruction of Khufu's pyramid complex, learn who the pyramid builders were, follow a timeline of pyramid construction, tour inside Tut’s tomb and try your hand at a wide variety of puzzles and games sure to test your knowledge and wits.

Pyramid (Recommended Resource)
There are quite a few books for children on this subject, such as David Macaulay's Pyramid (Houghton, 1975), George Hart's Ancient Egypt (Harcourt, 1989), and Jacqueline Morley's An Egyptian Pyramid (Peter Bedrick, 1991), but most of them use drawings as illustrations, whereas Putnam's has full-color photographs. The best coverage is given to Egyptian tombs, but pyramids in Nubia, Mexico, and Central America are also described. In addition to sharing information on what is known about the Egyptian pyramids, Putnam also mentions unsolved riddles about them, such as how many workers built them, how the stones were moved, etc. Occasionally, the author makes conjectures about why things were done or how people felt. The information here is similar to that found in the titles mentioned above, but the photo-essay format is a novelty. (School Library Journal Review)

Teaching Tip of the Week - Who Wants To Be A Dollarnaire!

This idea costs me about 35 dollars a year, but I have actually worked it into my supply budget for next year. We all know Regis and his famous nightly game show. I decided to use the same game for 5-10 minutes at the end of every third day of class. I randomly choose one child who answers a series of 10 questions. Of course, all of the questions are content based from class material and they increase in difficulty. I also allow them to phone a teacher (my Principal allowed it due to the success of the game), give them a 50:50 option, and allow them to poll the classroom. The dollar values are increments of 10 cents with safeties of 25 cents, 50 cents, and 75 cents. The dollar is the ultimate prize. I have to admit you wouldn't think that a dollar could entice anyone, but then again I work with twelve year olds. This is also great if you finish early on any day.

Teaching Tip of the Week - Watch Them Grow!

Every spring I have my students grow small plants in my classroom. I provide students with all the needed materials (seeds, soil, cups or pots, etc.). We have a contest to see which group of students can grow the largest plant. I give students 15 minutes at the beginning and end of the school day to care for their plants.
I usually start this activity 30 days prior to starting my plant unit as a discovery lesson. It really helps to engage them in the unit.
One thing that I have learned is to make sure to schedule this activity when you do not have long breaks off from school.

The History Channel Announces "Take A Veteran to School Day", a New National Initiative
The History Channel has developed a Take A Vet to School Day campaign to link veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities. This nationwide initiative will help strengthen ties in your communities and bring history to life in classrooms. The History Channel is encouraging schools to organize an event at their schools in the weeks leading up to Monday, November 12th, the official Veterans Day holiday. To learn more about how to organize a Take a Vet to School Day at your school or in your community, log on to veterans.com This website will include sample agendas, curriculum links, how-to guides, and information about how to work together with your local cable company to organize an event at your school.
This campaign is not just celebratory or commemorative, there are clear links to classroom course units and lesson plans. The Story of Veterans Day – a 25-minute documentary produced in conjunction withthe U.S. Department of Education – will be linked to state standards. A teacher's guide to this program will be available on the website as well. This site will also include oral history guidelines for middle and high school students, and suggestions for in-class activities for grades K-12 related to this program.

The Universe: Mars, The Red Planet

It has been fifty years since human first ventured into space, but the quest to understand the universe and its planets continues. With the similarity of its atmosphere and conditions to the planet to Earth, Mars has long fascinated humans as a possible candidate for habitation. Yet many questions about the "red planet" remain as NASA orbiters and rovers discover new evidence of from their explorationsof Mars. In this fascinating one-hour episode in The Universe series,the latest findings about Mars are explored and analyzed by scientists and other experts. Along the way, they introduce the key areas of research they have focused upon, and the most up-to-date hypotheses about the possible existence of life on Mars. Colorful computer graphics, careful commentary, and helpful visuals are used in this documentary to show what life might be like on Mars, and to imagine what kind of life forms might evolve in alien atmospheres. This is an excellent program for science and technology courses, giving students the opportunity to visualize the "red planet" and discover the cutting-edge research methods used to investigate its qualities.

Cities of the Underworld: London's Lost Cities

Cities of the Underworld is an exciting new series which explores the fascinating and unknown history of world cities by examinging the layers below their surface. Tombs, dungeons, shipwrecks, and other ruins buried city's sidewalks and streets reveal histories long forgotten. This one-hour episode, London's Lost Cities, peels back the layers below of one of the world's most powerful cities by searching underground. While the London of today is a cosmopolitan hub with images many of us know well, below the busy streets and marketplaces another city hides--a city of Roman baths, secret crypts, and lost rivers. Host Eric Gellar even unearths evidence of indestructible bunkers under London's surface that could once hold up to 8,000 people.
Many phases of London's influential past—from the era of the Roman empire to the Industrial Revolution and up through World War II, are examined in this episode. Students will follow along on a tour through key events from the city's past as host Gellar highlights key findings from his journey underground. This documentary lends a fresh perspective to the understanding of World War II, for example, revealing the location and activities of Winston Churchill's secret subterranean war rooms. This program is an excellent opportunity for students to see the physical evidence of how history changes overtime, and to think critically about how events of long ago shape the worlds both above and far below ground level. Clips from this episode would be a nice addition to courses or units with an emphasis on architecture and many aspects of British history, and can also provide historical context for courses with a contemporary focus.

Modern Marvels: Alcan Highway

Stretching from Dawson Creek in Canada all the way to Alaska, the Alcan Highway is one of the most picturesque roads in North America. But the story of this fifteen hundred mile plus road is one rooted in war and hardship. Built during World War II, the construction of the Alcan Highway was one of the major engineering feats of the twentieth century. Over ten thousand American soldiers built the highway, of which almost four thousand were African-American soldiers who had to contend with the racism and segregation of the era that mandated their isolation and relegated to them inferior tools and supplies. All of the laborers who built this critical highway faced severe physical and practical challenges. This one-hour Modern Marvels episode tells the story of the triumphant effort of these soldiers and introduces students to a vitally important yet little known chapter in American History. It gives students the chance to discuss the ways how labor and race relations have often been linked throughout US history, and to see how human ingenuity and hard work have abounded despite tremendous barriers.

The History Channel Announces "Take A Veteran to School Day", a New National Initiative
The History Channel has developed a Take A Vet to School Day campaign to link veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities. This nationwide initiative will help strengthen ties in your communities and bring history to life in classrooms. The History Channel is encouraging schools to organize an event at their schools in the weeks leading up to Monday, November 12th, the official Veterans Day holiday. To learn more about how to organize a Take a Vet to School Day at your school or in your community, log on to veterans.com This website will include sample agendas, curriculum links, how-to guides, and information about how to work together with your local cable company to organize an event at your school.
This campaign is not just celebratory or commemorative, there are clear links to classroom course units and lesson plans. The Story of Veterans Day – a 25-minute documentary produced in conjunction withthe U.S. Department of Education – will be linked to state standards. A teacher's guide to this program will be available on the website as well. This site will also include oral history guidelines for middle and high school students, and suggestions for in-class activities for grades K-12 related to this program.

From 50-75% of all words used in school books, library books, newspapers, and magazines are in the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary of 220 words. There are flashcards that can be printed and used to reinforce learning.
A Mad Libs Super Site
Okay, this is a great place to work on your child's use of nouns, adjectives and more! You can also use these fun tales to encourage your child's writing and reading skills.
Color Code Writing
This lesson not only utilizes a different approach to writing formation, but also a quick, colorful and easy formula for mastery. The purpose is to lower the frustration point for those students having a difficult time in forming letters or numbers.

She discovered her 14th comet this week in history. You can read about her here, and why she thinks comets might be gigantic flying snowballs.
Comets Unit Study
This is an extensive lesson plan for older children. They will explore the nature and composition of a comet. Your child will select ingredients to create a comet. They will learn to identify ingredients responsible for a comet nucleus, and how changes in the nucleus when the comet approaches the Sun causes two different kinds of tails to form. Students can explore some facts, myths, and legends linked to the appearance of comets throughout history.
