Printable planner forms

I LOVE forms! I don't always use them with the regularity I should (hence my pda! LOL), but... Here are some of the links I have found to free, printable forms. Some are strictly homeschool related, strictly household, more work-oriented, and there are even a few that are a really good combination.

http://donnayoung.org/index.htm TONS of forms and ideas for organization and homeschooling. Some of the things available include half-page planners (for 8.5 x 5.5 planners), full page planners (8.5 x 11), handwriting worksheets, and tons more!

http://www.teachervision.fen.com/page/47585.html This link changes from year to year. Once the 2007-2008 school year is over, this link will get you a "file not found (404)" message. Just look for the small link that says "Calendar" to get the most recent page. These are monthly calendars with events listed for each day of the year. Each event is linked to a page with activities and information about that event. Some VERY cool stuff here!

http://home.att.net/~bandcparker/forms.html A collection of links to pages with planner forms. Mostly homeschool related.

http://www.holdthatthought.com/free.php A few printable forms, including "Mom's Monthly Planner" and "Dad's Monthly Planner" for those whose schedules sometimes just *don't* coincide. "c)

http://www.oklahomahomeschool.com/forms.html A fairly large collection of free forms created by fellow-homeschooler Cindy Downes.

http://www.geocities.com/gpielstick/Homeschooling_Forms.html These forms are available in both pdf and MS Word format. The Word format is especially helpful for those (like me) that never seem to like a form exactly as-is and would like to modify it a bit...

http://members.aol.com/usteach/forms.html Another collection of mostly homeschool-related forms. These are available in View/Print (single forms), zipped collections of Word docs, or adobe acrobat.

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/organized.html A collection of forms and tips for organizing your Charlotte Mason-style homeschool.

http://organizedhome.com/household-notebook Tips and forms for creating your own Household Notebook from OrganizedHome.com. LOVE the tips and tricks and most of the forms. They also have forms, tips and tricks for creating an Organized Christmas notebook, Organized Scrapbooks notebooks, and Sew Organized fabric organizer notebook.

Just a few of my favorites. There are a TON more to be found just by googling "free printable planner forms".

Happy Organizing!!

Modern Marvels: The Manhattan Project
Monday, October 1st at 7PM/6c
At 5:30 a.m., July 16, 1945, scientists and dignitaries awaited the detonation of the first atomic bomb in a desolate area of the New Mexico desert aptly known as "Jornada del Muerto" (Journey of Death). Dubbed the Manhattan Project, the top-secret undertaking was tackled with unprecedented speed and expense. Experiments with uranium had revealed the possibility of atomic fission, a special laboratory was opened in Los Alamos, New Mexico where a team led by J. Robert Oppenheimer labored around the clock to try to build an actual atomic bomb. In this gripping one-hour documentary, Los Alamos scientists and engineers relate their trials, triumphs, and dark doubts about building the ultimate weapon of war. This documentary is an excellent introduction to this critical chapter in 20th century history and is a great opportunity for students to discuss the ramifications of nuclear weapons in times of war and peace.
Curriculum Links:
Modern Marvels: The Manhattan Project would be useful for History, American Culture, Ethics, Science and Technology, and Engineering classes. The Universe: The End of the Earth
Tuesday, October 2nd at 9PM/8c
The Universe series offers an epic exploration of the universe and its mysteries, providing an in-depth analysis from the planets to the stars to the edge of the known. As research into our universe has become more sophisticated, new secrets are yielded which help us understand our planet and the world beyond. Robotic rovers give us eyes on the red rock of Mars, NASA probes slam into comets at hyperspeed, and deep space telescopes capture amazing images of the birth of stars and their free-fall into black holes.
This one hour episode entitled The End of the Earth explores the possibility of cosmic phenomenon that could develop in space and potentially threaten the future of our planet. This program interviews NASA experts and scientific researchers who are currently exploring the possibilities of cosmic scenarios, and helping develop technologies that could pre-empt them. Scientists weigh in on some of the potential risks from space from stray asteroids to an engulfing sun, from gamma ray explosions to destruction by mysterious "dark energy." Though many of these scenarios are a long shot and present a grim view of unforeseen and menacing events from space, the study of these apocalyptic situations sheds much light on the universe that surrounds us. Educators may want to use clips from this program to set up debates or prompt conversations among students about the future of space and its relevance in our everyday lives.
Curriculum Links:
The End of the Earth is appropriate for high school students. It would be useful for Science, Astronomy, Earth Sciences, and Technology courses. Teachers may want to use clips from this documentary to supplement lesson plans related to astronomy and the universe, or show one episode in this series in its entirety in order the highlight one aspect of this topic. It fulfills several National Standards guidelines as outlined by the National Council for History Education including 1) Civilization, Cultural Diffusion, and Innovation, 2)Human Interaction with the Environment.

By December 1944, Americans have become weary of the war. In the Pacific, American progress has been slow and costly, with each island more fiercely defended than the last. In Europe, no one is prepared for the massive counter attack Hitler launches on December 16 in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxemburg. At Yalta, Allied leaders agree on a plan that includes massive bombing raids aimed at German oil facilities, defense factories, roads, railways and cities. In March alone, Allied warplanes drop almost as many bombs as they have dropped in the preceding three years combined. (CC, Stereo, HD, 1 year)

In mid-April, Americans are shocked by President Roosevelt's death; many do not even know the name of their new president, Harry Truman. Meanwhile, as Allied forces rapidly push across Germany from the east and west, American and British troops discover for themselves the true horrors of the Nazi's industrialized barbarism. Finally, on May 8, with their country in ruins and their fuehrer dead by his own hand, the Nazis surrender. As the Americans prepare to move on to Japan itself, more terrible losses seem inevitable. Allied leaders at Potsdam set forth the terms under which they will agree to end the war, but for most of Japan's rulers, unconditional surrender remains unthinkable. (CC, Stereo, HD, 1 year)

The Universe: The Moon
Tuesday, June 26th at 9PM/8c

Since the dawn of time, human beings have found comfort in the presence of the moon. A lantern for nighttime travelers, a timekeeper for farmers, and a location finder for sailors at sea, the moon has guided humans throughout history. For some cultures, the moon is considered a god, worthy of worship and reverence. As the only cosmic body ever visited by human beings, astronomers have studied the moon and its qualities in a quest to understand more about our universe. This episode in The Universe series traces the latest findings about the moon through conversations with astronomers and research scientists. With colorful visual imagery and amazing satellite footage, this episode presents up-to-date hypotheses about the moon and its origins. Viewers will learn about NASA's plans to establish an outpost on the moon as new technologies expand our ability to explore outer space. This episode, and all of the programs in The Universe series, offers a wonderful visual accompaniment to course units and lesson plans on astronomy and the study of space. Educators may want to use clips from this program, or entire episodes, to lend a visual component to their lessons and bring history into full color for their students.

Star Wars, The Legacy Revealed
Monday, July 2nd at 8PM/7c

Over thirty years and six movies, George Lucas has visually captured some of the most enduring philosophy and mythology, captivating the world's imagination through his fascinating characters and engrossing dramatic stories. Lucas' Star Wars saga is set in an ethereal, faraway galaxy replete with good and evil, a mysterious force and its dark side, and an epic hero who follows the archetypal journey through the underworld and into the light. Aided initially by a mentor, accompanied by warrior space pirates and eccentric androids, and quick to defend the damsel in distress, the cosmic path of Luke Skywalker can be viewed as a modern incarnation of the nautical path of Odysseus. His light-saber reminds us of Excalibur, his relationship with his sister can be compared with the bond between Apollo and Artemis, and the storm troopers he confronts are eerily reminiscent of the Nazi troops of the same name.

Star Wars: the Legacy Revealed is a two-hour documentary special which explores the mythical, political, and philosophical subtext behind Lucas' fantasy milestone. From ancient Greece to more contemporary times, Lucas has drawn inspiration and archetype throughout history from all over the world. This documentary examines these various influences with the commentary and reflection scholars, directors, and popular actors. Together, they reflect on how epic stories often go beyond special-effects and are firmly rooted in the mythology and political history of the world. This documentary offers students an opportunity to discuss the ways popular culture forms mirror and draw upon historical mythology. In a world saturated with imagery, this program gives educators and their students a chance to analyze these forms and their meaning.

Curriculum Links

Star Wars: the Legacy Revealed would be useful for high school and middle school classes on American History, Global History, Journalism, Film, Literature, Mythology, and Philosophy. Teachers may want to use clips from this two-hour special to animate their lesson plans and course units. This documentary fulfills several National Standards guidelines as outlined by the National Council for History Education including: (1) Values, Beliefs, Political Ideas and Institutions, (2) Civilization, cultural diffusion, and innovation, (3) Patterns of Social and Political Interaction and (4) Comparative History of Major Developments.

The Revolution is a gripping, 13 hour series which captures the remarkable story of the American Revolution from the roots of the rebellion through the victory on the battlefield at Yorktown. This series ventures beyond the conventional list of generals and politicians, introducing a fuller range of individuals who helped shape this pivotal era, including some of the war's most influential unsung heroes.

Some of the nation's foremost historians offer provocative political, military, and economic analysis, and most up-to-date interpretations of this pivotal era. With cinematic recreations and first-person reflections drawn from primary sources, this series is an excellent encapsulation of some of the most important people, events, and ideas to emerge from the American Revolution. Following the aftermath of the Revolution through the debate over the United States Constitution, this series reveals how the momentum and energy of freedom and independence influenced the creation of a bold new republic.

Curriculum Links:

The Revolution would be useful for high school and middle school classes on United States History, Military History, European History, and Colonial History. Teachers may want to use clips from this documentary to supplement their lesson plans related to the American Revolution, or show one episode in this series in its entirety in order the highlight one phase in the Revolutionary era. This documentary fulfills several National Standards guidelines as outlined by the National Council for History Education including: (1) Values, Beliefs, Political Ideas and Institutions, (2) Conflict and Cooperation, (3) Patterns of Social and Political Interaction and (4) Comparative History of Major Developments.

Pyramids of Egypt (Ancient History)

The Pyramids of Egypt were built by slaves as tombs for the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. The pyramids were marvels of ancient engineering that still inspire awe in modern-day visitors. These artificial mountains hid archaeological treasures and delights. In addition to the carefully mummified body of the pharaoh for whom each pyramid was build, one would also find articles that were intended to accompany the departed pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife. Some of these articles have made their way to museums and exhibitions. Dozens of items from the tomb of Tutankhamen, a very young pharaoh who ruled for a short nine years, have been exhibited in cities around the world.

In this mini unit, you can: wander through the Great Pyramid, follow the 1997 field season of a team of archaeologists as they excavated the bakery that fed the pyramid builders, learn about all of the pyramids of the Old Kingdom, explore a reconstruction of Khufu's pyramid complex, learn who the pyramid builders were, follow a timeline of pyramid construction, tour inside Tut’s tomb and try your hand at a wide variety of puzzles and games sure to test your knowledge and wits.

Go to the complete mini-unit

Pyramid (Recommended Resource)

There are quite a few books for children on this subject, such as David Macaulay's Pyramid (Houghton, 1975), George Hart's Ancient Egypt (Harcourt, 1989), and Jacqueline Morley's An Egyptian Pyramid (Peter Bedrick, 1991), but most of them use drawings as illustrations, whereas Putnam's has full-color photographs. The best coverage is given to Egyptian tombs, but pyramids in Nubia, Mexico, and Central America are also described. In addition to sharing information on what is known about the Egyptian pyramids, Putnam also mentions unsolved riddles about them, such as how many workers built them, how the stones were moved, etc. Occasionally, the author makes conjectures about why things were done or how people felt. The information here is similar to that found in the titles mentioned above, but the photo-essay format is a novelty. (School Library Journal Review)

The Search for Eternal Egypt (DVR Alert)

Sunday, June 24 @ 11am and 4pm ET - History International

Combining interviews with top Egyptologists, specially shot location footage, dramatized reenactments, archive images, and computer graphics, this special tells the dramatic story of the development of Egyptology over the last 200 years. Starting in 1798 with the arrival of Napoleonic scholars, we reveal how their systematic survey of the country became the cornerstone of modern research into ancient Egypt. We also cover development of modern archaeological techniques, featuring the story of the "father of modern archaeology", Flinders Petrie, and Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. After bringing the story up to date, highlighting some of the most fascinating discoveries of the last 20 years, we explore the threat posed to the remains of ancient Egypt by population growth, pollution, and mass tourism. Find out about "Eternal Egypt", an ambitious project to document Egypt's past and make it available to a worldwide audience over the Internet.

Teaching Tip of the Week - Who Wants To Be A Dollarnaire!
By: Tracy Peters, 7th Grade English Teacher: West Field, New Jersey

This idea costs me about 35 dollars a year, but I have actually worked it into my supply budget for next year. We all know Regis and his famous nightly game show. I decided to use the same game for 5-10 minutes at the end of every third day of class. I randomly choose one child who answers a series of 10 questions. Of course, all of the questions are content based from class material and they increase in difficulty. I also allow them to phone a teacher (my Principal allowed it due to the success of the game), give them a 50:50 option, and allow them to poll the classroom. The dollar values are increments of 10 cents with safeties of 25 cents, 50 cents, and 75 cents. The dollar is the ultimate prize. I have to admit you wouldn't think that a dollar could entice anyone, but then again I work with twelve year olds. This is also great if you finish early on any day.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

While visiting his son at his Army base, a father chatted with a colleague of his son.

"What rank are you?" the father asked.

"I'm relieved to say that I've just been promoted from captain to major."

"Relieved? Why?"

"Because," the officer replied, "my last name is Hook."

Life with kids often involves negotiation, whether we like it or not. And negotiating with kids can be a challenging process. If you don't teach them how to work with you, they may never learn how to work with others.
