National Coin Week

http://www.money. org/AM/PrinterTe mplate.cfm? Section=National _Coin_Week

ANA National Coin Week
April 15-21, 2007

The Presidents Are Coming

Each year during the third week of April, the American Numismatic Association celebrates National Coin Week with exhibits, presentations and other activities at civic centers, libraries, and schools to let the world know about the joys of collecting and studying coins, paper notes, and other forms of money.

This year on Sunday, April 15, ANA club-members across the country are spending specially marked quarters in local retail stores and coffee shops.

If you find one of the quarters, contact the club nearest you from the List of Participating Clubs.

The first person to contact their local club wins a Mint set. Everyone who finds a specially marked quarter is entered into a drawing and the grand prize winner receives a First Spouse $10 Gold Coin, valued at over $400.

Each National Coin Week has a theme chosen to engage people in learning more about money's role in culture, art, history and science.

The 2007 National Coin Week theme "The Presidents are Coming!" celebrates the United States Mint's Presidential $1 Coin Program which begins in 2007. The Mint is honoring our Nation's Presidents by issuing $1 circulating coins featuring images of the Presidents in the order they served, beginning with Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison in 2007.

The $1 coins feature the Statue of Liberty on the reverse; and, the mottos "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unim," the date and mintmark on the edge.

Here are some additional ideas for what you can do to celebrate National Coin Week:

Work with your local school, bank or library to develop an educational display on the Presidents and associated numismatic collectibles for National Coin Week. Download and print the ANA's exhibit The Presidents Are Coming!

Hold a numismatic Open House during April. Invite the public to attend a special educational program. Ask several club members to prepare short presentations on Washington, Adams, Jefferson or Madison. Include at least one mini-presentation on the history of the U.S. dollar.

Make mini-presentations to local Scout groups, schools, libraries, civic groups, etc. and distribute U.S. coins in 2X2 flips with interesting numismatic information about the President depected on the coin on one side of the insert and club information on the other (web address, meeting times and place, etc).

Customize a National Coin Week flyer with details about your club's events.

Send a press release out to publicize your activities.

Try these suggestions or make up your own. Remember, the fun of collecting can begin with the brand new change in your pocket!

Literature links

I've received quite a few links in my e-mail the past several days (ok, couple of weeks) that I keep saving the e-mail "as new" thinking I'll get back to it, and just haven't had time. SO, I'm going to go on and post the links without checking them. I don't want to lose the links, but until we get this house-finding/financing/eventually moving business finished I don't know when I'll have time to sit down and actually check them out and categorize them!

Miss Maggie (the creator of the Old Fashioned Education website) says: "This collection has grown leaps and bounds since I last looked it over. Some great resources here. The PDF versions are relatively easy to download too."

From the website: "Literature for Children is a collection of the treasures of children's literature published largely in the United States and Great Britain from before 1850 to beyond 1950. At the core of this Collection are books from the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature, housed in the Department of Special Collections and Area Studies at the University of Florida. Books from the Departments of Special Collections at the Florida Atlantic University, Florida State University, and the University of South Florida join volumes from the Baldwin Library to complete the Collection. The foundation for this Collection was a cataloging and preservation microfilming project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The NEH project included a digital color management strategy for the reproduction of illustrations as children saw them."

Digging for the Truth: Lost Treasure of the Copper Scroll
Monday, April 9th at 9PM/8c
In the depths of an Israeli cave, archaeologists found rolls of dusty manuscripts dating to the 1st century AD, and they are inscribed on a copper scroll! Scholars believe the copper scrolls represent a detailed treasure map--a list of hiding places where the priests of Jerusalem's Second Temple stored their most precious silver and gold artifacts during times of trouble. The Second Temple, a major site of worship from the 6th century BC through the 1st century AD, was a significant historical and religious site in Jerusalem. In this one hour Digging for the Truth episode, follow along with host Josh Bernstein as he attempts to unravel the ancient mystery of the copper scrolls. Along the way, viewers will travel with Josh as he rappels into caves outside Qumran, creates his own scroll, and searches the area using ground-penetrating radar. Throughout his journey, new insights into this complex past are revealed through Josh's examination of artifacts and the clues they provide. Educators will find that this program provides students with an engaging and exciting way to discover how new archeological methods can reveal fresh insights into the cultures and social structures of long ago.

Curriculum Links
Digging for the Truth: Lost Treasure of the Copper Scroll, as well as this entire series, would be useful for World History, European History, Geography, World Civilization, Science and Technology and Global History courses. It is appropriate for middle school and high school students. This program fulfills the following guidelines outlined by the National Council for History Education: (1) Patterns of Social and Political Interaction, (2) Civilization, Cultural Diffusion and Innovation, (3) Human Interaction with the Environment, and (4) Comparative History of Major Developments.

Meteors: Fire in the Sky
Tuesday, April 10th at 8PM/7c
They cross the solar system and hold clues about our planet and universe. Can they destroy civilizations? Did they wipe out the dinosaurs? Have they brought life to our planet? And when will the next one hit? Aided by elaborate animation and live-action footage, Meteors: Fire in the Sky explores what likely happened 65-million years ago, when an object plowed into the Yucatan Peninsula and generated unceasing speculation about these puzzling phenomena. Viewers will learn how certain spectacular meteor falls throughout history have advanced our understanding of what they are and the danger that they pose. With commentary from leading experts such astronomers and geologists, this program calls upon the insights of NASA scientists and others to learn how an increased knowledge of Earth-threatening asteroids and comets can be a safeguard for the future. Modern Marvels: The Stock Exchange
Friday, April 13th at 7PM/6c
Welcome to the Stock Exchange, the fast-paced, fast-trading center of the American economy that is truly a marvel of organization. On any given day, nearly 90 million dollars changes hands every minute. This compelling episode in the Modern Marvels series traces this American institution from its inception through the modern era. Students will learn about how the modern, technology-driven market of today has its origins in ancient maritime trade and exploration. Students will follow along as commentators trace the history of this key economic institution. Modern Marvels: The Stock Exchange traces the story of American economic growth from its origins through the rise of Wall Street barons like J.P. Morgan, Hettie Green and J. Gould. Students will learn how these titans funded the industrial revolution -- railroads, canals and westward expansion. Investors traded by telegraph, tickertape and telephone, and then followed their stocks in the Wall Street Journal. The stock market crash of 1929 wiped out fortunes and rocked markets all over the world, but a new, improved stock exchange rebounded, targeting post-war investors with pension funds, mutual funds and portfolio diversification. Today, computer technology and the communications revolution fuel a vibrant world-wide market in which many transactions are still conducted face to face on trading floors along Wall Street. Educators and their students will find that an examination of the Stock Exchange reveals a wealth of knowledge about the development of the American economy, pivotal events in American history, and the broader ramifications of the international monetary system.

Curriculum Links:
Modern Marvels: The Stock Exchange would be an excellent contribution to courses in American History, American Culture, Social Studies and Economics. 2. What is the main purpose of the Stock Exchange today? How has it changed since it was first created?
